Jon MacNair

The New Work of Jon Macnair will be on display,
February 28th - March 27th.

These pen and ink drawings go beyond simple narratives. They depict the edge of a world that is familiar and yet foreign; a limbo world.  Mummified cats, weary hooded travelers and decapitated heads are examples of some of the imagery that floats and trudges through colorless anthropomorphic landscapes.

While menacing, these landscapes are more intriguing than they are scary. They portray a calm clarity despite being strife with fear and anxiety. The drawings evoke the mind's search to understanding to life's realities. For example, cats became a central theme to Jon's work after he lost his two feline friends.

Medieval tapestries and illuminated manuscripts influence Jon.  He favors the fanciful stories and illustrations of fairy tales and mythology.  Artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and Maurice Sendak come to mind when viewing his work.
